Course Descriptions
The Flamenco Summer Intensive is the source for understanding authentic Flamenco. National and local artists join to offer classes for Flamenco dance, guitar, percussion and singing. Classes are integrated so that students experience the interaction between guitar and dance, singing & rhythm that is essential to Flamenco. Instruction is student centered. An ideal introduction for beginning students or a challenge for intermediate and advanced students.

Flamenco Dance Courses
6-Day Intensive · July 27 – Aug 1

Vibrant and compelling, flamenco dance originated in Southern Spanish Gypsy culture. Brought to the world by such artists as Carmen Amaya and Antonio Gades, it is characterized by percussive footwork, striking postures and a great emphasis on musicianship, individual style and expression.
Level I Essentials
6-day Intro Course July 28 – Aug 1
A perfect way to start Flamenco dance. No previous dance experience required. Learn the fundamentals of footwork, posture, line, arms, rhythm, and a short choreography for “Tangos”. Includes Flamenco singing classes.
Level II Intermediate & Level III Advanced
6-Day Courses · July 27 – Aug 1
Both courses include:
· A Complete Choreography
set by Claudia Carolina
Level II “Alegrías” A joyful song from the southern Spanish port of Cádiz.
Level III “Soleá” A central palo in the flamenco repertoire. Soleá is
considered to be the mother of all flamenco forms.

A practical, hands-on approach to learning dance accompaniment is the guitarist’s key to
understanding Flamenco music.
All Courses Include:
Dance Accompaniment
Guitarists will accompany dance classes under the guidance of the guitar and dance instructors.
Guitar Masterclasses with Jim Shewchuk
Jim Shewchuk will teach chord progressions, guitar “llamadas and cierres” – calls and closes and
“falsetas” – melodies for each piece being studied.
Flamenco Singing with Claire Marchand

Levels II and III only.
*All guitar participants must have 1-2 years
experience playing guitar and be able to chord

Singing
With Claire Marchand · 3 Hours

The musical structure of the singing or ‘cante’ is the basis for all flamenco dance and music. Singing in a group, participants will learn several ‘palos’ or song forms. Guitarists and percussionists can sing, or accompany, or both.
Rhythm
With Claire Marchand · 2 Hours
Sat. July 31 & Sun. Aug. 1
In this fun class of rhythm games and improvisation, participants learn rhythm patterns for palmas, footwork & percussion and also create their own.

* Guitar students will accompany all choreography and technique classes from July 27 to Aug. 1, guided by Jim Shewchuk. Masterclasses are also offered to learn chord progressions, llamadas (calls), cierres (closes) and falsetas (melodic lines) for each dance and music form being studied. Guitar classes include singing and rhythm classes.

Claudia Carolina
Guest Flamenco Choreographer
and Instructor
Claudia Carolina is a powerful dancer and the nation’s most esteemed Flamenco choreographer. Ms. Carolina lived in Spain for ten years, studying and working with such legends as Manolete, Paco Fernandes, “El Veneno” and the late Maria Alba. She has toured and worked in Spain, Europe, the Middle East, U.S.A. and Canada. She choreographed and performed in Misa Flamenca, the first Flamenco Mass to be realized in Canada, which toured Manitoba and Alberta in 1999 and 2001. She also directed Mariposa, the first Flamenco dance drama to be performed at the Canada Dance Festival (2004). Most recently she directed The Women, based on Lorca’s tragic heroines, which toured to Winnipeg (March 2007) and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa (Jan 2008).
Jim Shewchuk
Flamenco Guitarist
Jim Shewchuk began playing Flamenco in 1984. He is known for his masterful interpretation and impeccable technique, which show a reverence for the early masters such as Sabicas. Jim is an excellent teacher for both novice and professional guitarists.

Claire Marchand
Flamenco Dancer, Choreographer
Following early studies in Spanish Regional Dance with Carmen Cano de Infante, Marchand studied with Toronto-based Flamenco choreographer Claudia Carolina. She went on to study in Spain with such maestros as El Güito, Manolete, La Cíntia, Belén Maya, Joaquin Ruiz, the singer Talegón de Córdoba and many others. In 2008 she toured Canada as dance soloist with the phenomenal 19 year old Flamenco guitar virtuoso of Spain Javier Conde and his ensemble (Sept. 2008).
Marchand is a featured soloist in Flamenco festivals across Canada and internationally. She opened for Flamenco icon Isabel Bayón at the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival (2009). She also works in interdisciplinary projects such as “Crash Sites and Sacred Patter, director Karen Kuzak, TRIPdance (2006).
As an independent dancer and choreographer she has created and collaborated in many works including “Flamenco Vivo” (2002), “Encuentro” (2003), “La Maja” Solo Dance Works (2005) and “RITMO!” (2006).
As a member of Theatre Flamenco Dance Collective, Marchand collaborates in innovative works such as Misa Flamenca (1999 and 2001), Mariposa (2002 and Canada Dance Festival 2004), and The Women (2007 & 2008). She recently directed a documentary “Marchand en Espagne” in Spain featuring interviews with legendary Flamenco choreographers for Radio-Canada, currently in production. Claire Marchand established the first studio in Manitoba devoted to Spanish Dance and Music in 1999, where local and guest dancers and guitarists can share their skills. She has taught for the Professional Program at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and has set choreography on the RWB Aspirants. She has taught private students in Madrid and Jerez de la Frontera, Spain and in Taipei, Taiwan
Currently Claire Marchand is soloing as part of the full-length production of “Mis Hermanas” by Vancouver choreographer Rosario Ancer which will tour Mexico in October 2010.
